Using Books, CDs, and DVDs to Learn With RewindRewind

Instructional books, DVDs and CDs can be a great source of frustration when trying to learn something physical like playing the guitar, magic tricks or dancing etc.  You read a guitar book, and it's got fancy notes telling you what to play on the guitar, sometimes accompanied by guitar tablature (or tab).  The problem is if you're a beginner or plan on attacking material that is beyond your current capabilites.  First off, I would only recommend books that are not accompanied by a CD or DVD for very basic topics such as guitar technique exercises.  A few reasons guitar books without accompanying CDs or DVDs are not recommended are listed below:

  • If you can't hear what each lesson sounds like when you're playing it, how do you know you're doing it properly when you pick up your guitar?
  • Timing is the most overlooked aspect of playing any instrument, especially guitar!
  • If you're not listening to an accompanying CD, you must at least use a metronome!
  • Most beginner and intemediate guitar players don't know what a quintuplet sounds like
  • You shouldn't have to guess how long rests are

Those are just a few of the reasons why it's best to look for books that come with a CD or a DVD when trying to learn guitar.  With that said, there are exceptions to the rule.  Some of the best books I've come accross.

The next page explains how you can use RewindRewind absolutely free to maximize the value of your guitar books and dvds.
